Winery of the Week: Mullineux

'The winery is at the top its game,' we noted last time, and this edition we can only repeat the statement with five exclamation marks added - four for each of Winery of the Year awards they've received to date in this guide, the fifth for the Top Performing Winery of the Year accolade this year, for the astonishing run of eight maximum (five-star) ratings. A performance deeply worthy of recognition and celebration for Andrea and Chris Mullineux and their partner Analjit Singh, the more so considering their internationally hailed venture was founded only sixteen years ago. Their original focus, reflecting the diverse soils of Swartland using shiraz and chenin as the lens in the varietal wines, and cornerstone of the blends, is unchanged. As is the ongoing process of fine-tuning, evolution and improvement, both of the third-party sites they work with, and their home-farm, Roundstone. A new planting there is the rare mutation semillon gris, the centrepiece of one of Andrea's CWG Auction bottlings. The Mullineux and a nursery have spent six years propagating clean cuttings from the original old vineyard, which Andrea describes as 'a place of historical significance'. Andrea and Chris continue to show their remarkable dexterity with different varieties and terroirs under Leeu Passant, and mentor the members of their team who make the Great Heart wines (see separate listings).
