After a strong showing in the inaugural Drinks Business Green Awards last year, South African wineries this year have again demonstrated their eco credentials by being short-listed in four of the nine categories and winning in two.

The international Awards highlight and reward leadership on environment, sustainability and climate change by drinks companies worldwide.

Four South African producers were shortlisted this year - Distell, The Company of Wine People, DGB and Durbanville Hills Winery - and the latter pair were declared winners of the Logistics & Supply Chain Green Initiative of the Year and the Ethical Award of the Year categories respectively.

Durbanville Hills was recognised for its involvement, via the Durbanville Hills Share Purchase Trust, in projects alleviating the need within the local community for education, improved school facilities and farmworker empowerment.

Durbanville Hills MD Albert Gerber said the award was as much the community's as it was recognition for the cellar. "We believe our commitment to making a difference has been life-changing for many individuals and children in the area, and we are incredibly proud of receiving this international award."

In last year's competition, Paarl winery Backsberg Estate Cellars won the Sustainability Award, Inge Kotzé, project co-ordinator of WWF's Biodiversity & Wine Initiative, was awarded Green Personality of the Year, while Elgin-based Paul Cluver of Paul Cluver Estate Wines received The Lifetime Achievement Award.
